MATCH REPORT: PSG 1-3 Toulouse

It was a strange build-up at the Parc des Princes for Kylian Mbappé’s final game in front of the home Paris Saint-Germain fans. His name was booed by fans when it was read pre-match, but then a tifo was presented by the Collectif Ultras Paris – seemingly warming up the Parc’s energy towards the departing France captain. It was, of course, the first game for Les Parisiens following the French capital club’s exit from the Champions League against Dortmund last Tuesday.

The evening was of course all about Mbappé, and he began proceedings brightly, combining well with Bradley Barcola in the early minutes down the right side. The France captain had the ball in the back of the net by the seventh minute after he was served a straightforward floated ball via Tenas over the top of the Toulousain defence, managing to skip past Restes and finish into an open net. After a VAR check for offside, the goal was given and Mbappé celebrated his parting Parc des Princes goal early on – running over to congratulate goalkeeper Arnaud Tenas for his first career assist (8′).

Yet Les Violets struck back several minutes later via a chipped finish from Thijs Dallinga, served by Diarra nicely in the box (13′). The Dutchman became the first Toulouse FC player to score his 14th goal in a Ligue 1 season since Wissam Ben Yedder in 2015-2016 and was then involved again as he latched onto a one-on-one opportunity, but Tenas was strong enough to spread himself and snuff out the danger. Aboukhlal would get a glorious opportunity to strike from the edge of the box, but his shot was parried away confidently by Tenas. With that began a period of good attacking impetus on the part of the away side, who threatened in the wide areas – spreading PSG whenever they had possession.

Some nice combination play would see the ball fall to Mbappé once more, and his driven strike was saved well by Restes. After a quiet ending to the first half, it would be level at the break. Carlos Soler would have two golden chances to get on the scoresheet, the first was deflected just wide of the post – and the second was a mis-timed close range header that he really should have buried into the back of the net. Lee Kang-In would then shoot from range, but his strike went just wide of the post.

Yet, just as PSG looked like they began to dominate the chances Yann Ghobo’s strike from the edge of the box would curl right into the top corner – a brilliant strike from the attacking midfielder (65′). Les Violets certainly came and dampened the mood for PSG on the night that they would receive the Ligue 1 trophy for the 12th time in their history.
